Black God Comes To An End
The famous Square Enix manga series, by Lim Dall-young and Park Sung-woo, Black God is coming to an end in just three more chapters. Announced in yesterday’s Japanese comic magazine, Young Gangan, the paranormal action series Black God, or Kuro Kami, will see its final chapter in volume 19, set for Japanese publication on August 25th.
Black God tells the story of the young, Japanese, aspiring game designer, Keita Ibuki, and his best friend Akane Sano. It is a regular slice of life manga about a boy who’s mother died under mysterious circumstance and is now trying to produce the worlds greatest video game with his pals. Oh, and there are also incredibly super powered beings known as Tera Guardians that protect the coexistence balance, and one of them by the name of Kuro happens to have given Keita her arm.
Okay, so it’s a little complex, but it’s really quite good. Very much a traditional style of shonen manga in that a regular Joe with a mysterious back story is dragged into some paranormal lifestyle and fight for the world, the series certain is aimed at seinen readers with very ecchi scenes that tease nudity, but are generally not much worse than you’d find in old Sailor Moon cartoons. The funny bit is that this “Japanese manga” is actually created by Korean manhwa artists.
The manga series has spawned a 24 episode anime series (Kurokami: The Animation) and has been translated into several different languages, with a strong popularity in France and Germany. In America the series is published by Yen Press, who is set to publish the 17th volume of the series in October. The series also stands out by having the first anime (alongside Naruto: Shippuden) to premiere on television in three countries (Japan, South Korea, and the United States of America) within 24-hours of one another. Because of all this and the great art and story of Black God, it will be sad to see the series end. Never-the-less, we can all hope to see new and exciting projects on the horizon from Lim Dall-young and Park Sung-woo next year.
