Everyone always talks about their zombie plan, an idea of what weapon best fends off the undead, or where they will run/hide in a zombie apocalypse. Of course, outside of playing the part of a brain hungry walker in the occasional zombie walk, you’re generally not going to get a chance to test out these plans…unless, perhaps, if you live in Miami. But joking of bad drug trips aside, the creator of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, has a game to truly test your undead survival skills. No, it’s not one of Cryptozoic’s fancy board games, but rather a real life zombie survival experience at San Diego’s Comic Con International! That’s right, this year a select number of people will be able to truly prove they have what it takes to survive a Z-day event at The Walking Dead Escape.

Held at San Diego’s Petco Park, right across from the convention center that hosts San Diego Comic Con, will be the insane zombie obstacle course. There, fans and zombie fanatics can buy a ticket to enjoy the event in one of three forms. For just $70 you can be one of the last human survivors, forced to run a grueling course through the baseball stadium to reach an evacuation point and prove you can out smart and out run a zombie. For an as of yet undetermined cost, you can embrace the virus and be turned into a walker (covered in undead make up), hunting down your once fellow humans to make their trip to safety that much more complicated. Either way, each of these participants will earn a special variant cover of The Walking Dead #100, as well as the fun of this great experience. But I did say there were three ways to enjoy this event, and there are. If you’re not much of a survivalist, and don’t really care for brains, there is a spectator option. Once more the price is not yet listed, but tickets will be made available to simply watch the men and women of San Diego run for their lives from decaying corpses at Petco Park. This option wont get you the exclusive TWD #100 variant, but you will get an awesome poster of the cover that you can take home and further practice your voyeurism on.

So what does the course look like? Well, we just so happen to have a map of the run below. If you’re at all familiar with Petco Park, that isn’t the longest run possible, but it’s no walk in the park either, as the trip is going to bring you up and down a fair few flights of stairs. Thankfully, FEMA has left a resupply station for survivors to relax and water up at inbetween zombie dodging.

The event will be held on July 12th through the 14th, the first 3 full days of Comic Con. The dates and hours are listed below, and waves of humans will begin their fun for the evacuation point every 20-minutes during the hours of operation.

Thursday, July 12 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Friday, July 13 from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Saturday, July 14 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Now keep in mind, only 15,000 survivors will get their chance to run and over 130,000 people are signed up for Comic Con International this year. Furthermore, this is not limited to those with Comic Con badges, so you can be damned sure that many Southern California residents who want in on the fun but didn’t get a Comic Con badge will be trying to get a ticket for this as well. So if you want to prove your mad zombie skills on either side of the inevitable apocalypse, you should go to http://www.thewalkingdeadescape.com/ now and buy your tickets. The Evacuation Route will contain multiple obstacles, such as cargo nets and rope bridges, so be prepared to run, crawl, climb, and slide your way to victory. All participants must be 16 years of age or older, though the event organizers do not intend to disqualify any survivors who can’t handle a specific obstacle…it just means you’re more than likely going to be infected by a zombie if you can’t handle a cargo net climb. Yes, you can wear cosplay. No, you can’t bring weapons. The infection can spread with a touch (thank god, because I do not want to be bit by some of these rabid comic con attendees), so expect a very tag like spreading of the zombie virus. Oh, and as long as tickets aren’t sold out by con? There will be walk up opportunities for just $90 a run. Considering how well The Walking Dead comics sell for second hand? It might be worth the entry just to resell your variant. Find out more at the website above or their Facebook, by clicking here. See you all in San Diego, where I will likely be running alongside or from some of you.
