Tonight saw the first of several showings, held at Wal-Marts throughout the country, of never-before-seen footage from the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man film. Starting at 12:01AM today, with repeat showings at 10:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. today and tomorrow, you can watch an exclusive clip from The Amazing Spider-man, while also buying said clip on DVD along with a reprint copy of Amazing Spider-man #6. However, if you couldn’t make it…while, you didn’t miss much. Speak Geeky To Me staff writer Darren Schram and myself went to our local Wal-Mart for the event this evening to cover all that went down. Sadly, despite signage in the front of the store (see the above picture) and several calls to management in the days prior, guaranteeing the event would happen at midnight, we were not utterly unsurprised to see no one awaiting this event. The Southern California Wal-Mart we chose to go to was mainly a ghost town of late night Wal-Mart shoppers and stockers going about their everyday lives. There was no gathering of comic Geeks or Spider-fans that were awaiting along with us, so much of our journey was spent in the toy section bitching about the inferior quality of action figures of late and how amusing it was to take cell phone photos of yourself in toy masks no adult could truly consider purchasing (though we did consider purchasing them and having a fight between Thor’s hammer and Snake Eye’s katanna in the parking lot).

As 12:01AM rolled around we wondered what was going to be shown and to what degree the event would exist, especially if we were the only audience the store would have. Sadly, after talking to a few clueless, but kind, employees and a few managers, it almost took the entire staff of Wal-Mart to even find out why we were there. This store was utterly unaware they were having an event (and yes, I had called 3 times before today to confirm they specifically were having the event), had not put anything out, nor prepared a single part of their event. After a short time we at least walked away with the sneak peek bundle, but probably had more fun messing around in the toy aisle than at any other part of this failed event.

So as we have little to report on in relation to the event, and hope your Wal-Mart did better than ours, we can talk about the bundle. For $2.96 it is not an expensive purchase, but not all that we were lead to believe. The Amazing Spider-Man #6 reproduction is actually just ashcan size, and hardly the great of reproductions. It does contain the original story, along with some pin-ups of recent Lizard themed ASM covers, but it’s still less than what you’d expect in a Marvel Legends action figure promo comic. The DVD is nice though, with a preview of the game, some stuff for the Webslinger AR app, and 2 featurettes. The DVD featurettes are a behind-the-scenes making of Amazing Spider-man, with cast and crew talking about the character of Spider-Man and the film, as well as a clip from the movie itself. The clip details the scene we’ve actually seen in countless trailers, with Spider-Man stopping a car thief well joking about his only weakness being knives. It’s a rather hilarious scene that very nicely captures the spirit of Spider-Man. All and all, while the event was nothing great and the bundle was just barely worth its low cost, it has made me more excited about The Amazing Spider-Man movie, so mission barely accomplished.
