SG2M Travels: San Diego Comic Con International 2012
It’s nearing the middle of July and Geeks everywhere are getting excited for the biggest annual Geek event to come around each year: San Diego Comic Con International. Hopefully you are one of the lucky few who managed to get a ticket to this amazing event that combines all spectrums of Geek culture, from comics to movies to video games and more! This year is already looking to be the craziest Comic Con yet, with big comic events like The Walking Dead Escape taking over PetCo Park, movie ads already being plastered across San Diego’s skyline, and entire buildings outside the convention center being booked up for Geek events. Of course, as usual, the convention sold out months ago, with an overwhelmingly well over 126,000+ people expected to flock to downtown San Diego for the event. Expect crowds like nothing else you’ve ever known (unless you’ve braved the geek gatherings that are Comiket or Angoulême International Comics Festival), unfathomable lines, and just outright organized chaos as your transverse the sea of Geeks this year. But remember, it will all be worth it to get that comic signed by your favorite creator, pick up that awesome exclusive, or fill your oversized bag with countless promotional freebies! Of course, if you can’t make it or don’t want to deal with the push and pull of Geek Prom (the convention’s unofficial name amongst many Comic Con veterans), Speak Geeky To Me will be there live tweeting, photographing, and reporting on the entire event. Thing might get a little quiet here on the site this weekend, but follow our twitter and check back next week for an unending pour of hot new Geek news and awesome Comic Con coverage!

History:
San Diego Comic Con International is a comic convention with a rich history that dates back over 40 years. Having been first held at the US Grant Hotel way back in 1970, it was then known as Golden State Comic Con and held a small attendance of 300 fans. Back then the convention just had a handful of guests, such as Ray Bradbury and Jack Kirby. However over the years the convention grew and moved from hotel to hotel until it found its home at the new San Diego Convention Center in 1991. Now Comic Con hosts over 126,000 attendees and unofficially spreads itself throughout downtown San Diego, with guests lodged throughout southern San Diego County. Yet despite the size of the convention and its continued growth and attendance cap, San Diego holds tightly on to the event as they expand their convention center and adjust the city to keep the beloved Geek festival each summer.
