Ten years ago, comic creators Phil Smith and J.K. Woodward aspired to make a dystopian comic telling the Sci-fi adventure of a human test subject in a world where human experimentation had become common. At the time, both creators were still relatively new to the industry and none of the series went to market or saw publication. However, now both Smith and Woodward have put in some time at many major comic companies, such as Top Cow, IDW, Marvel, and Skybound Entertainment, and are looking to bring new life to this lost project. Thanks to Kickstarter and countless potential fans, Phil Smith is looking to bring his comic series, Human: Oceanic, to print through Fighting Lion Comics, but they need your help. You can check out the campaign for Human: Oceanic by clicking here and learn more about the upcoming graphic novel below.

Human: Oceanic is the story of  future where human experimentation has become accepted by the worlds nations, giving the benefit to some and damning others to a life of forced servitude and torture. Of course it does not stop there. With the doors to Human experimentation blown open the Military Industrial complex initiates a series of trials secretly called “Human: Oceanic”. It is a research project designed to give soldiers on the front lines the ability to predict enemy actions in both hand to hand combat as well as higher level precognitive abilities at the command level. The project has an unintended side effect opening up the subject’s consciousness to past and future realities as well as the path of particular lives. The consciousness splinters as the subject’s mind travel’s various paths into alternate pasts and futures. In the graphic novel for Human: Oceanic, as described in the video above, the story follows one test subject, code named Bellerophon, from this project and what unfolds due to the experimentation on him. It is a tale of human rights being sacrificed for the greater good, and just what that might mean.

The graphic novel is set to be a 160-page black and white tale, with all the art done by J.K. Woodward (Fallen Angel, Star Trek: The Next Generation / Doctor Who: Assimilation). The story, written by Phil Smith (Trinity: Blood on the Sands, Witchblade: Due Process), and art is already complete and waiting for print. That is where the Kickstarter campaign comes in. Smith and Woodward need $8,575 to cover publication costs, like printing, purchasing a barcode, and shipping. They started their campaign in the middle of September and still have a ways to go to meet their goal before October 13th. Fans who donate can get various items in return, such as PDF and signed physical copies of the comic, prints, hologram ID cards, and more. If the campaign is successful, Smith hopes to have the graphic novel out to fans by January.
