Frank Cho, the beloved comic creator known for his sexy cheese cake pin-up pieces, is now working on a very surprising new book for Marvel Comics. Savage Wolverine is the newest title announced in Marvel’s upcoming Marvel Now initiative, which begins this Wednesday. The new on-going series, starring everyone’s favorite Canadian mutant, will start in January of 2013. Frank Cho will be both the writer and artist on this new on-going, but it is uncertain how long that will last. Cho, though a brilliant artist, is notorious for seeing delays in any releases where he has been the interior artist, such as Mighty Avengers and The Ultimates from Marvel. But when these comics are released the interiors are often just as beautiful as his covers, which Frank has provided many of for Marvel. Frank is no stranger to Wolverine, with quite a few Marvel covers and a handful of interiors showing off the adamantium clawed X-man in some glorious scene of blood, battle, or humor. Fans of those excellent traits in Cho’s Marvel covers wont be disappointed with his Savage Wolverine interiors, of which Frank is promising will contain much violence, humor, and even a sexy co-star. Being titled the Savage Wolverine, you can probably predict that the opening arc takes place in the Savage Land. And, as with any good story set in the Savage Land, Shanna the She-Devil will of course be making an appearance alongside Wolverine.

Back in 2005, Cho showed off his rather stunning interior work at Marvel via a 7-issue Shanna the She-Devil mini-series. Unfortunately most of the follow ups only featured Cho covers or attempts to replicate Cho’s style. Now we finally get a proper return Frank in the Savage Land with the sexy Shanna, some big apes, and giant dinosaurs, all of which are Frank’s specialties. Best of all, for those who enjoyed Frank’s work in the recent Avengers Vs X-men #0, we will of course see the artist once more drawing Wolverine for at least the opening arc. A great jumping on point for new readers, this might be the biggest and best Wolverine story since Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan. However, we are now left uncertain on when, if ever, we will see some of Frank Cho’s previously advertised Image titles such as Guns & Dinos and the return of Liberty Meadows. Yet we can all never-the-less look forward to Savage Wolverine’s release early next year.
