New York Comic Con ’12: DC Creators Don’t Know What To Say About Wonder Woman
It’s hard to say if the creators of DC were all caught off guard by a camera shoved in their face or they just aren’t certain how they really feel about their main female character. But in this video just posted by DC Entertainment TV, we can see and hear Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Brian Azzarello, and Cliff Chiang awkwardly talk about Wonder Woman. This is a prime example of why you want to script out your promotional works and not put creative types on the spot. The creators all seem hesitant and uneasy as they reach for answers to various questions about Diana of Themyscira. Some of my favorite responses are Geoff Johns’ immediately cut off description of Wonder Woman towards the start of the video, Azzarello calling Batman “sad”, Azzarello getting giddy over Wonder Woman’s muscles, Azzarello’s responses in general, Morrison’s insightful description of how Wonder Woman has never seen “twitters” [sic] because “you know, they didn’t have that on paradise island, they had special, you know, Greek phones they would use to contact the harpys”, and Geoff describing the ‘wonders of Wonder Woman’. That said, there are a few noteworthy gems in this video, such as Geoff hinting at a big new Wonder Woman villain appearing in next year’s Justice League and Azzarello offering the same in the second year of Wonder Woman’s on-going series he is writing. All in all though, this just seems like a humorous mistake on DC’s behalf, yet it is the proverbial car crash you can’t look away from.

In all reality, I’m loving DC’s recent candid interview videos, but I don’t feel they’re conveying the message the company truly wants. It seems more like the type of youtube video you’d get from fans trying to lightly mock whoever they’re interviewing at a con. I mean, it’s great seeing the more candid side of these creators, because it truly is more of what they are actually like when you chat with them…but it feels so hilariously unprofessional on the company’s behalf. Almost like the video editors are having a go at their bosses.
