This weekend Marvel has reignited their cosmic line with the announcement and reveals for two new cosmic based books. Since 2010′s Thanos Imperative event there really hasn’t been much activity for the cosmic characters of Marvel outside of 2 Anihilators mini-series and some Fantastic Four storylines. But the void of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Nova and Guadians of the Galaxy series being gone is about to be rectified, as Marvel is bringing back both series.

Nova, which has been talked about since the appearance of the newest Nova in Avengers Vs X-men #1, will be written by Jeph Loeb. This new Nova, named Sam Alexander, will of course be the center of this series, which Loeb claims takes place heavily on Earth to begin with. “We’ll be seeing the origin of Nova and how he is learning what it’s like to be a super hero,” Loeb reveals. “He’s first got to learn about the responsibility of being hero. The responsibility that comes with the helmet.” Bringing Alexander’s quest to be a hero to the page artistically is Loeb’s frequent collaborative partner, Ed McGuinness. Dexter Vines will also be on art duties, inking McGuinness, while Marte Gracia is responsible for the spectacular cosmic colors. Issue #1, which will hold the Marvel Now banner, is set to hit stores in February of next year. Check out the covers to issue #1 & 2 below.

Marvel also announced this weekend that Guardians of the Galaxy was finally set to return in an on-going format. This move is not much of a surprise with previous announcements of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, announced at San Diego’s Comic Con, set to release from Marvel Studios on August 1st, 2014. The Guardians last popped up in Brian Michael Bendis intial story arc in Avengers Assemble, and Bendis will be following the team into their new title as the series writer. But what is a pleasant surprise is that Steve McNiven will be joining the crew as the series artist, along with John Dell and Justin Ponsor. The team remains for the most part what was seen in Avengers Assemble, led by Star Lord, Peter Quill. For those less familiar, accompanying Star Lord in the teams many adventures will be the gun toting Rocket Raccoon, an ultra intelligent furry earth creature who was once head of security for an intergalactic insane asylum; Drax the Destroyer, a superhuman ex-real estate agent who is destined to kill Thanos; Gamora, a sexy alien assassin who was once trained by Thanos; Bug, an insect like warrior who spun out of the old Micronauts license; and Groot, who is…Groot, the tree like alien king of Planet X. All in all they should make for a very fun team, but if you’re curious how Bendis and McNiven will do on the book and don’t want to wait for its release next March, the creators are doing a short Guardians tale focused on the origin of Star Lord in the upcoming Marvel Now! Point One #1.
