The popular Mass Effect video game has also found its way into the comic medium through the publisher, Dark Horse. Now Dark Horse, which has put out several Mass Effect mini-series and one-shots, is collecting the comics in a way sure to make collectors and fans giddy. Coming in May of next year, Dark Horse is publishing a super-deluxe oversized hardcover collecting every Mass Effect comic to date! The collection is part of Dark Horses higher end, Library Edition, of collected comic tales. Made in close collaboration with the creators of the games, including Mass Effect 2 and 3 lead writer Mac Walters, the Mass Effect comics are tightly integrated and essential chapters of gaming’s most acclaimed science fiction epic. This collection includes all four Mass Effect mini-series—Redemption, Evolution, Invasion, and Homeworlds—as well as the short stories from MySpace Dark Horse Presents, USAToday.com, and the Dark Horse digital store, all annotated by the artists and writers who worked on them. The hardcover will also include an extensive sketchbook of never-before-seen art from the game and comics. A must-own for any Mass Effect fan, the Mass Effect Library Edition goes on sale May 22, 2013.

Of course, that wasn’t all the Mass Effect comic news Dark Horse announced at last weekends New York Comic Con, with word of a new digital one-shot being released on N-7 Day! Not familiar with N7 Day? Well, that is likely because there has never officially been one before this year. N-7 is the vocational code in the Systems Alliance military given to high level special forces personnel. It also works out to be November 7th by simple transference, so fans and BioWare have declared this November 7th the inaugural N-7 Day, where fans can celebrate their love of Mass Effect must as Star Wars fans enjoy May 4th. The new Mass Effect digital comic will be centered on the first hanar Spectre, Blasto. Titled Blasto: Eternity Is Forever, Mac Walters is back to write the one-shot, with art by Omar Francia. Blasto, who is described as having “a lover in every port and a gun in every tentacle,” doesn’t have time for your solid-waste excretions. On a remote space station overlooking the elcor home world, the lone Spectre puts an end to the nefarious deeds of an outlaw band of mercenaries bent on galactic domination. Blasto: Eternity Is Forever will be available exclusively in the Dark Horse Digital store on November 7, 2012, the same day as the release of BioWare’s Mass Effect Trilogy game. You can see the cover by Francia on your left.

Now there was one final Mass Effect announcement from Dark Horse at NYCC this year, and it wasn’t comic related. In fact, it was much more three dimensional than a comic. Dark Horse Deluxe, the group that makes all the awesome statues and figures for Dark Horse, announced a brand-new phase of collectibles inspired by Mass Effect. The first collectible to introduce this series is a limited-edition, large-scale replica of the Reaper known as Sovereign, which was on display at the Dark Horse booth all last weekend at New York Comic Con. Set for release on June 26, 2013, this premium replica will be offered at a whopping retail price of $349.99, likely to only be purchased by the most hardcore of Mass Effect fans. Those fans can already pre-order the strictly limited, 18.5” tall replica at the BioWare store today. Each piece will be individually numbered and will include an in-game bonus item for Mass Effect 3 multiplayer (Though do note that this in-game item will only be available for Xbox 360 and PC versions of Mass Effect 3).  For further detail on the piece, know that this craft was the flagship of the rogue Spectre, Saren Arterius. Responsible for leading a devastating attack on the Citadel in the original Mass Effect game, Sovereign is an enormous sentient dreadnought, larger than two kilometers in length in the game. The Dark Horse re-creation of Sovereign also has a sculpted base depicting a devastated city and planetary surface to convey its huge scale. The replica will be solicited to comic stores in the Dark Horse Deluxe section of November’s issue of Diamond Previews. While the final edition size has yet to be determined, it is certain that less than 1,000 of these high-end collectibles will be produced, making them rather limited when compared to the incredibly high sales figures for the Mass Effect game.
