The newest book from acclaimed creator Brian Wood (The Massive, Ultimate X-men) hits stores this post-Christmas comic Wednesday, and it’s certainly an interesting one. Teamed with the talented newcomer, Ming Doyle (The Loneliest Astronaut, Fantastic Four), Wood brings fans the comic, Mara, a story of an especially gifted young woman in a sports-and war-obsessed future. Young Mara Prince is at the top of the world, a global celebrity in a culture that prizes physical achievement above all else. After she manifests supernatural abilities on live TV, she becomes famous all over again but for the worst reasons. Integrating themes of superpowers, celebrity worship, corporate power, feminism, and political brinksmanship, Mara takes a classic genre to new places.

As you can see in our 5-page preview below, Ming Doyle’s art is quite brilliant and looks beautiful when colored by Jordie Bellaire. Keen eye’d fans might recall Doyle and Bellaire having already worked together (albeit with Doyle just writing and Bellaire providing all the art) on the great bit from Womanthology: Space, “The Adventures of Princess Plutonia!” Here they have concocted something even more magnificent, and just wait until you pick up the full issue, which has a rather stunning splash of Mara by the pair. Mara #1 is in stores this Wednesday, December 26th, so make sure you dive out of your after x-mas food coma to swing by the comic shop and pick this issue up.
