Marvel’s Welcome Home Variants

This January some of Marvel’s top heroes will line up to welcome home someone or something. What it is that they’re in line for we’re unsure of, but we do know what it looks like and how you can find out. Throughout January, twenty Marvel comics will feature variants, generally at a 1:20 ratio, titled Welcome Home variants. The variants all show various Marvel heroes, related to the comics the variants are featured on, standing in line for something. Some of these heroes look excited, others seem like they could care less, but they’re all in it for the long wait just like us. Hopefully they know what they’re waiting for.

The twenty variant covers are all interlocking and will connect from Angela: Assassin of Asgard #2 onward through a mysterious 20th cover that follows Wolverines #1 by a few comics. All art was done by Marvel artist Salvador Larrocca, in quite the epically wide vision. With the title, Welcome Home Variants, and the fact that Star Wars is being welcomed home to Marvel this January there was a lot of early belief that the Welcome Home variants would all be Star Wars covers on the regular books. It was certainly a fun thought. Likely this line will all still conclude in Star Wars something or other…but the background of Uncanny X-Men #30 and Wolverines #1 appears to be a movie poster for Avengers 2. Could that be a clue as to what the heroes are in line for? Or perhaps that hint is too early in line to tell. But with the amount of popcorn involved, it certainly seems like a movie line. Then again…the Asgardians are holding balloons as if it was a theme park. Could this be a way of revealing a Marvel land at Disneyland?!?

Each week we’re expected to see more of the 20 variant covers, as they run into F.O.C. through Diamond Distribution, where retailers must do their final adjustments to their comic orders. As fans, you might want to let it be known to these retailers that you’re interested in these variants, because at 1:20 they might not come easy when you’re trying to collect ALL 20 variants. But when complete? It’ll certainly make for a cool and long display. Check out the current 8 covers revealed so far below, in one solid image:
