Star Wars: Rogue One & Episode VIII News

This was the headline on Starwars.com this morning as big news for Star Wars fans hit the internet today. Disney CEO Bob Iger held a shareholders meeting today, across from Lucasfilm HQ, at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Fransisco, CA. The purpose, amongst other things, was to announce that Episode VIII would now be released May 26th, 2017, moving up from its original December 2017 release. This was joyous news for loyal fans who feel Star Wars should always be released in May. It should be noted this release date is just 1 day after the 40 year anniversary of Episode IV.

Also, it was confirmed that Rian Johnson (Looper) will be writing and directing Episode VIII. The other purpose of this meeting was to announce that the previously untitled Star Wars stand-alone film being directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), slated to be released December 16th, 2016, would be titled Rogue One. As soon as this hit the web, fandom cheered! Yes it is true there are no plot details about this film, and so far the only person cast is Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, Amazing Spider-Man 2), but I think it is safe to assume this will be a film focused on the infamous Rogue Squadron, and I for

one (along with the countless posts I am seeing on social media sites) could not be more excited for this. Fans have been clamoring for sometime to see some kind of live action Rogue Squadron stories, looks like we might finally get our wish.
We are being told that the idea for the first, in what we can only hope is a long line of stand-alone stories, came from CCO of Industrial Light & Magic, John Knoll. Knoll will executive produce the film along with Simon Emanuel (Dark Knight Rises)
Between all the new films, and the return and successful release of Star Wars comics through Marvel, its amazing to see a 40 year old property just continue to get hotter.
