Geeks worldwide know they’ve reached an era of acceptance and popularity when a vast majority of the largest grossing opening weekends for films are Geek related. In fact, I’d say well over 60 of the top 100 biggest opening weekends belong to Geek themed movies, according to Box Office Mojo. So is it any surprise that the best Super Hero/comic movie ever has taken the top spot?

The Avengers has broken box office records this weekend with a $207MILLION opening weekend. That blows the previous place holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2, away by over $35MILLION! Worldwide the film has already grossed over $600MILLION in the 12-days it has been in theaters (with the worldwide release beginning April 25th in nations like France, Italy, Australia, and Taiwan). The film opened with $17.9 million in Russia, $18 million in China, and was the biggest opening weekend of all time in

Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Central America, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, and the Philippines! Let’s see a non-Geek themed movie pull results like that!
The Avengers is now in theaters in almost all major market countries, except Israel (May 10), Poland (May 11), and poor Japan, which must wait until August 17! I suppose that can be considered revenge for getting the Marvel anime’s way before America.
With this news, Walt Disney Studios wants to remind you that there is more to come from Marvel Studios and their great superheroes. Expect a sequel to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger on April 4, 2014, a sequel to Thor on November 15, 2013, and the third installment of Iron Man (with the Hulk if we cross our fingers hard enough) hitting theaters May 3, 2013, just under a year away!
Remember if you haven’t seen it yet (or are going back again) there are TWO (2) post-credit scenes! So make sure you stay well after the film ends to see both awesome goodies.
