SDCC ’12: Avatar – The Legend of Korra Panel
We were going to write up a very detailed summary of overly crowded panel on Nickelodeon’s greatest TV series ever. It would have included a bunch of bootlegged photos of the concept art for the series (like was seen on our twitter), quotes from the cast and crew, and information about book 2 of The Legend of Korra, Spirits. However, this is the modern era of technology where words sometimes just can’t do a big Comic Con panel any justice. So without further adieu, I present you all the San Diego Comic Con 2012 Legend of Korra panel:
Now of course it would just be lazy reporting if we didn’t write a little bit more, and you might have noticed there is about 30 minutes of content missing from that panel. Curious what it was? That was the time when Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko shared all the concept art and juicy details of book 2 from The Legend of Korra. You saw a great animatic in the video above, now lets put context to it with all those bootleg style photos we got from the panel.
Legend of Korra – Book 2: Spirits will consist of 14 episodes that are currently in production, yet lack a release date from Nickelodeon. Michael & Dante are still working close to the team, but are already plotting out Book 3 of Korra. Spirits will take place approximately 6 months after Book 1 of the Legend of Korra, and Team Avatar has all somewhat gone off in different directions. Mako is now a cop, Asami has taken over her father’s company (and become a bit of an Amelia Earhart like figure) , and Bolin now runs the Fire-Ferrets (which is an entirely new team of misfit benders you might have noticed in the video). While Book 2 still will take place in Republic City, we shall see some new locations as well. Attending a festival in the Southern Water Tribe, Korra will see her parents (Tonraq & Senna) again, as well as introduce us to her uncle, Unalaq, and twin cousins (who look identically miserable and similar to Parks & Recreation’s April Ludgate). This is hardly the end to new characters, as we finally see Aang’s daughter, Kya, who the creators have described as a bit of a hippy. Aang’s son Bumi also joins the cast as a regular character fans will adore, but Tenzen will undoubtedly hate. Note Bumi’s special Southern Water Tribe costume, consisting of manly ear muffs. Ending the announcement of new characters is Verick, a Howard Hughes style playboy philanthropist known for his flamboyant clothes style. As you might expect, Bolin gets along with Verick quite swimmingly.
Of course, Book 2 is called Spirits for a reason, and that is because it deals heavily with the Spirit world. In the second book we will see Korra enter the spirit world, while fans learn more about the origin of the Avatar line. From the looks of the animation it all begins when a demon of sorts escapes from the Spirit world and attacks the Southern Water Tribe during the festival the Avatar is attending. This was somewhat seen in the animatics of the video above. If you look at the beautiful background art in our gallery below you will even see a glowing iceberg believed to be a holy connection to the spirit world.
