Son of Batman logoSon of BatmanThis spring DC’s newest animated direct to DVD feature film will be Son of Batman, the origin of Damian Wayne as originally told by Grant Morrison. As with most of the DC animated films, this movie doesn’t look like it follows Morrison’s story that closely…but for some that might be all for the better. Grant Morrison wrote the original Batman & Son story arc, introducing the character of Damian Wayne, back during 2006 in Batman #655-658. A somewhat disjointed tale, the story bases itself off the concepts of the 1987 Batman: Son of the Demon graphic novel, where Talia Al Ghul gave birth to Bruce Wayne’s son. In Batman & Son, Damian gets abruptly introduced to Bruce amidst a League of Assassins scuffle, joins Batman for a brief few issues, and then disappears back with his mother shortly after. This happens in a time while Ra’s Al Ghul is dead, after the events of 2004′s Batman: Death and the Maidens, and before his 2007 resurrection in Batman: The Resurrection of Ra’s Al Ghul. The main villain during this arc is Talia and a small army of Man-Bat ninja assassins. Thankfully it looks like Son of Batman will be taking things a slightly different direction, tying in the death of Ra’s Al Ghul with the movies main antagonist, Deathstroke. The film seems to still include Man-Bat ninja assassins, as we can see from the trailer, but perhaps the storyline might flow a bit better.

As of now, Son of Batman is not yet rated nor does it have a release date. We do know that when it is released it will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, and for digital download. Jason O’Mara, who voices Batman in next month’s Justice League: War direct to DVD animated film, will once again portray Batman. Joining O’Mara will be Stuart Allan as Damian, Morena Baccarin as Talia, Giancarlo Esposito as Ra’s Al Ghul, Thomas Gibson as Deathstroke, David McCallum as Alfred, and Xander Berkeley as Kirk Langstrom (the original Man-Bat, who also appeared in Batman & Son). The Son of Batman is set to premiere at this year’s Wondercon, once again held in Anaheim, California, but you can check out the trailer right now by watching below:
