Geek Cred, A Show For Comic Fans

Sports fans have The League. Gamers have The Guild. Now comic fans get their own show with the new comedy Geek Cred. While some could say comic geeks have already had their TV time thanks to Kevin Smith’s Comic Book Men, which offers the reality TV approach towards a group of guys running a real life comic shop, we don’t really have much in the way of a fictional group of friends that are all about comics. Big Bang Theory is the closest it gets, and some geeks and comic fans aren’t as appreciative of the show as others. Geek Cred looks to be the show comic fans actually want, taking place in Manhattan Beach’s actual comic shop, The Comic Bug.

So what exactly is Geek Cred? Geek Cred is a new comedy centered around the pop culture-laden misadventures of Callie and Ben, employees at a comic book store, their aloof boss Spencer, and Jerome, a regular customer who always gets mixed up in the employees’ adventures. It stars Michele Boyd (Team Unicorn, The Guild), Wes Robertson (Blunderkind, Hell and Mr. Fudge), Damion Poitier (True Blood, Dollhouse, Marvel’s The Avengers) and Miley Yamamoto (How to Rock, Retcon) and is directed by creator Daniel Beals (Sexy Nightmare Slayers, Old Rivalry, Mediating Kidnapper). Beals is certainly a true geek, who I’ve personally known for quite some time. Having worked in a comic shop in his youth, he would regularly pop up on various comic forums and attend comic conventions like any other hardcore comic fan. Since he’d gone Hollywood with various works in acting, directing, and other behind the scenes gigs it was only a matter of time before his true geek came out in a project that merged his love of creating media and comics. Beals even managed to get two well known comic creators in the shows credits, with comic writer Marc Andreyko (Batwoman, The Illegitimates) as a consultant and Dean Zachary (Green Lantern, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) as a concept designer! Thus, Geek Cred isn’t just a show for geeks, it really is a show by geeks! But like many of the best projects these days, Geek Cred needs a little help getting on to a screen near you. That is where IndieGoGo and a few more geeks like you can come in to save the day.

Geek Cred has just started a brand new crowd funding campaign on IndieGoGo to help produce the show. Their goal is to produce a 10-episode season, with a reasonable budget of roughly $3000 per episode. The donations would all go towards creating the show by allowing the crew to rent equipment, create props and wardrobe, actually pay its deserving cast and crew, and also cover the numerous forms of promotion that will be required to ensure that Geek Cred is the success it deserves to be. There are also several stretch goals to up the quality of production, which will make for a better show that can more properly represent the comic and geek community as a whole, and possibly even extend the show’s first season out by 2 additional episodes. The creators of Geek Cred’s goal is to have this all before San Diego Comic Con 2014 in July. That means they will be shooting, editing, and airing ten full episodes of the new comedy series through their impending site www.geekcredseries.com within the next six months.

But the question you might be asking now, as often is the case in crowd funding scenarios, is what do you get for helping fund this? Aside from helping finance what looks to be a great addition to geek culture and some generally good comedy entertainment, the Geek Cred IndieGoGo campaign has quite a few nice perks. The perks range from personal thank yous on their website to T-shirts and early viewing options of the episodes. For those really looking to donate big to the show there are even perks that include production credits on the show and a chance for a walk on part!
