Hedge Knight, The Game Of Thrones Prequels, Are Back In Comic Form
With the recent tidal wave of love for George RR Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire book series, brought on by HBO’s popular Game of Thrones TV series based on the books, many people are reading the books, watching the show, and wishing for more. But there is more that likely many of you are unaware of in the form of several prequel novellas written by Martin. These stories are called the Tales of Dunk and Egg, with their individual titles being The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. They take place 90 years before Game of Thrones (the series first novel or the first episode of the TV series) and follow a young hedge knight, Dunk, and Prince Aegon Targaryen, Egg. Some comic fans might recall the first and second novellas being adapted into comic form by Ben Avery and Mike S. Miller through Dabel Bros. brief time in comic publishing. The first novella was adapted as a 6-issue miniseries from Image Comics and Devil’s Due Publishing. Marvel then brought the creators back for the second 6-issue volume, based on The Sworn Sword, in 2007.
Unfortunately, both of these comic adaptions were released before the extreme popularity of all things Westeros hit in 2011, leading them to have a smaller print run and exist purely in a highly sought after secondary market these days, selling for way above cover price. Tracking the comics down now-a-days is hardly impossible, but it isn’t necessarily cheap. The good news is, Amazon is finally here to help you. Under the new Amazon Publishing imprint, Jet City Comics, The Hedge Knight comics are being re-released in a collected form both physically and digitally. The new collections also feature new cover art by the series’ interior artist and Game of Thrones cover artist, Mike S. Miller. You can check out both covers bellow, followed by more amazing Hedge Knight news.

Now as if this news wasn’t great enough to make me consider buying the comics again, let alone giving opportunity to many Game of Thrones fans to check out the series for the first time, there’s more. The re-issued Hedge Knight volume 1 is set for release on November 5th (and you can pre-order it by clicking here), with volume 2 coming out sometime early next year. When talking to Mike S. Miller at San Diego Comic Con this year he dropped hint of returning to the series for a third volume, based on George RR Martin’s Mystery Knight. I was very excited about this, but figured it was best to wait until confirmation of the series release. Tonight I managed to get that, as it appears Mike S. Miller has just recently agreed upon the contract for the third Hedge Knight miniseries and will begin work in just a few short months.
Miller confirmed this on his Art of Ice and Fire Facebook page, where you can view much of his amazing Game of Thrones/Hedge Knight/Song of Ice and Fire artwork. If you’re a fan of the series, I highly recommend checking it out.
