Long Beach Comic Con’s Independent Comics In 15 Seconds

This weekend Speak Geeky To Me officially joined the Instagram using world with our very own Instagram account. We also attended the 5th annual Long Beach Comic Con and thought we’d commemorate the two occasions by trying something new. Using the video sharing features of Instagram, we spoke with several amazing independent comic creators about their awesome independent comics. But considering Instagram videos are so short, we only had 15 seconds for them to describe their comics and why you should check them out. So we call this new feature “In 15 Seconds”, and hope to do it at many future conventions, giving you a look at all the great comics out there that are often over looked. Perhaps soon we will even expand this segment to ask creators and celebrities quick questions we’ve all been dying to hear the answers to. But for now, check out some of the awesome independent comics you could’ve found at Long Beach Comic Con’s artist alley and can still find via the links preceding the videos.

The year: 2050. War has ravaged the world and more specifically, America. At the heart of nuclear destruction and everything that led up to it is the new evolution of man: super powered beings called shadows, who are government-created, controlled and unrelentingly sought after by all nations. Samantha, a very powerful Shadow, has decided that she wants nothing to do with any of it and is trying to just live out her life in a mostly post-apocalyptic world. She soon finds herself caught between a government that has only brought her ruin and a rebel faction of Shadows that wants to change the balance of power. What is a girl to do? Is it really possible to be neutral despite the fact that evil will triumph when good people do nothing?

Dan Franklin explains Mind of Mirrors in 15 seconds

Mind of Mirrors is a Kickstarter funded comic by musicians Dan & Leland, with art by Tom Hodges.

The story opens with our hero, Jack, in a jail cell. He’s just turned 25, and has landed himself in a type of trouble that’s become all too familiar to him after another bar fight. Growing up in a small mid-Western town, Devils Lake, ND, the child of an absent mother and a distant father, with no real prospects for his future, Jack has spent his life rebelling against the mediocrity that seems to be his destiny. Unwilling to live an average life, he has been raging through the world with no regard for his future. Alison, his best friend since childhood, comes to bail him out yet again. Jack realizes that there’s a romantic charge between them that he hadn’t acknowledged. They fall in love and Jack is forced to question whether he might be able to live a domesticated life after all.
One night, after some time of domestic bliss, Jack ends up at the local watering hole and meets an unusually persuasive and flamboyant man who gives him a drink from a golden flask. The stranger persuades Jack, under the influence of the unusual elixir, that he needs to explore all that the world has to offer before he’s tied down in a small-town, average life. The elixir begins to transport Jack into a mirror world in which he becomes more and more enmeshed, losing his mind by degrees until he is deeply engaged in a totally unfamiliar, hallucinogenic reality.

After many adventures and a further departure into the alternate reality, Jack struggles to disentangle himself from the mirror world, but ends up further down his own personal rabbit hole. His quest is to understand not only the strange landscape in which he’s been trapped, but also the nature of his self.

Alex Thompson shares Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs Zombies in 15 seconds

Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies is a pop culture parody comic book series created by B. Alex Thompson and published by Approbation Comics. The story follows three sorority sisters as they fight for survival during a zombie apocalypse. As Alex puts it, not much you really need. Go in with an open mind. Have fun!

Another title by Alex Thompson, the very intriguing Hass in 15 seconds

A story that’s been described as “Romeo & Juliet” meets “American History X” comes a dramatic thriller from writer B. Alex Thompson and artist Federico Santagati, published through Approbation Comics.

Finally, Sebastian Kadlecik talks Penguins vs Possums in 15 seconds

Published by JBSK Comics, Penguins Vs Possums is a comic we’ve already lovingly reviewed, and tells a Shakespearean level tale about two warring animal tribes.
