NYCC ’13: Marvel’s All New All-New Marvel Now Titles & Storylines

Before New York Comic Con started last week we shared some of Marvel’s many teasers for upcoming series and storylines they intended to publish come 2014 and announce at the show. The teasers all consisted of a single word and a creative team. You can see all the teasers in the previous article, by clicking here. To make it easier for you, we decided to give all these announcements below, along with the teaser word initially solicited. In some of these cases, I think the teaser word says more about the series and storylines than Marvel’s description did. Never the less, we provide a bit of information and opinion after each one so you can have a taste of what is to come from Marvel next year. Corporate – Peter David & Carmine Di Giandomenico – ALL NEW X-FACTOR - Yes, X-factor is back, but it won’t be the team you recall from the previous volume that could easily be listed as one of my personal favorite comic series. Now the X-factor is a slightly more corporate team starring Polaris, Gambit, and Quicksilver. Who else will be a part of this team? Well, it wouldn’t be X-factor without a bit of mystery.

Judgement – Brian Michael Bendis & Sara Pichelli – THE TRIAL OF JEAN GREY - A crossover event between All-New X-men and Guardians of the Galaxy, The Trial of Jean Grey spills out of The Battle For The Atom (the current X-men event) and will undoubtedly have continuing consequences relating to the X-men of the past currently in our present.

Sinners – Charles Soule & Carlo Barberi – THUNDERBOLTS - The Thunderbolts series continues on with a new artist and a new character added to the team’s roster. The phantom biker, Ghost Rider will now be added to the series.

Trial – Brian Michael Bendis & Stuart Immonen – THE TRIAL OF JEAN GREY - This is the other half of the aforementioned crossover between All-New X-men and Guardians of the Galaxy, with the Guardian’s creative team.

Wrath – Richard Isanove – SAVAGE WOLVERINE - Isanove tells a story of Wolverine in late 1933 during the Great Depression and Prohibition.

Atonement – Nathan Edmonson & Phil Noto – BLACK WIDOW - A new on-going series starring the scarlet haired ex-soviet spy and written by a man who’s mastered this genre. If you want proof that Edmonson can write a great spy story featuring a sexy redhead, just check out his Image Comics miniseries, Dancer.

Descent – Dennis Hopeless & Kev Walker – AVENGERS UNDERCOVER - A brand new series following up Avengers Arena, this comic will deal with the survivors of the game working a secret mission to infiltrate the Masters of Evil organization.

Extinction – Sam Humphries & Andre Araujo - AVENGERS AI - A simple tease for a new arc in the Avengers AI series. I sadly have to admit, that’s something that needs teasing and general fan prodding to remind us this comic is still there.

Frenemies – Ales Kot & Michael Walsh – SECRET AVENGERS - The recent title gets a relaunch, with a new #1 issue, a new creative team, and a new member as Spiderwoman joins the squad.

Global – Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, & Stefano Caselli – AVENGERS WORLD - Yet another new series designed to compliment the main Avengers title and focus on some of the team’s new characters. This book will focus on many of the characters and events that might not get enough on-panel time in the main title. I like this idea, as there are many members in the current Avengers roster, and some of them could use some more fleshing out.

Mindbubble – Rick Remender, Pascual Alixe , & Nic Klein – CAPTAIN AMERICA - Another teaser for a new storyline, plain and simple.

Trust – Al Ewing & Lee Garbett - LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD - A brand new series with a slightly older Loki working as an agent of the All Mother. If you liked Loki’s role in Journey Into Mystery, this plot line sounds similar, but deals with more of an older heart throb version of Loki. How did Loki suddenly age from his Young Avenger’s style kid self? It’s simple enough to explain: Magic.

Defend – Ales Kot & Garry Brown – IRON PATRIORT - A new ongoing series for Iron Man 2.0/War Machine. No, this wont feature Norman Osborn, as the book will be starring James Rhodes under the armor, much like in Iron Man 3.

Overdrive – Felipe Smith & Tradd Moore – ALL NEW GHOST RIDER - First he shows up in Thunderbolts, now he’s got a new ongoing series! But with this creative team? I’m rather looking forward to the title.

Rad! – Dan Slott & Michael Allred – SILVER SURFER - A new on-going series for Norrin Radd (how the Rad didn’t tip me off, I’ll never known). This could be rather comical considering the creative team, and while Mike Allred wouldn’t have been my first choice for such a series I feel he could really fit it and make it worth reading.

Assassin – Zeb Wells & Mike Del Mundo – ELEKTRA - Starting this March, Elektra will begin killing killers much like her love interest, Punisher, under the hand of Zeb Wells, who wrote the great Dark Reign: Elektra miniseries. This new on-going series should get rather bloody, but beautiful as well based on Del Mundo’s cover art.

Higher – Kelly Sue Deconnick & David Lopez – CAPTAIN MARVEL - A new ongoing series starting in March of next year, Deconnick stays on with Captain Marvel, but brings a new artist and new set of numbering to the series.

Hunted – Nathan Edmondson & Mitch Gerads – THE PUNISHER - Once again, a new on-going is on the horizon for the Punisher. This is a character who rarely fits well or lasts long in the main Marvel universe, but his last incarnation was stunning until Rucka left the title. Now we have the team behind the stellar image series The Activity, who have Frank go to LA for a very interesting new story. This is a team who knows how to write a book like this really well and has even done some rather intense research to guarantee that.

The End – Dan Slott & Giuseppe Camuncoli - SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN - It looks like Superior Spider-Man could be coming to an end in the big Goblin Nation story arc that everything has been building up to. One way or another it should make for a strong stroke in Dan Slott’s painting of the Doc Ock Spider-Man era.

War – Chris Yost (X-23) & Marcus To – NEW WARRIORS - Unbelievably, but with quite a bit of potential, New Warriors returns to a new series with Justice, Speedball, and the new Nova. Joining the classic heroes on the new team roster will be Hummingbird (Scarlet Spider character), Kaine (The Scarlet Spider), Sun Girl (an old Timely character, but with a new take from the upcoming Superior Spider-Man Team Up), and more. It’s been a while since Marvel took a new swing at the New Warriors and this might just be one that sticks. Scarlet Spider is a clone. Justice is a mutant. A new character named Haechi an Inhuman. Speedball’s still a super human. Hummingbird is magical demi-god. Nova has alien powers. Water Snake is an Atlantean. Plus, Sun Girl is a plain ol’ human. Tied with Marcus To’s amazing art that depicts this age group so well, I think Yost might be able to swing one out of the park for Marvel on a series that constantly has fallen short in the past.

Additional to the teasers we posted last week, there is one that either slipped by or just snuck up on us at the convention. So here is one more announcement for an upcoming All-New Marvel Now title set to hit stores next year:

Charles Soule & Javier Pulido – SHE-HULK - The comedic, green skinned attorney at law/superhero with rage filled family gets another chance at an on-going series in 2014. Returning to her legal end, Charles Soule actually being a lawyer could make for some interesting tales for Jennifer Walters, not to mention his talent writing action in Thunderbolts that could crossover for the She-Hulk side. It’s just a matter of blending that comedy with action in the right proportions.
