The unexpected short story released on Pottermore.com (or shared exclusively with Today HERE if you are a mugglish laymen without a Pottermore account) in the early hours of July 8, 2014, turned this sweltering Tuesday morning from shockingly bad to a feeling of uncontrollable elation - at first.

Written in the prose style belonging to Rita Skeeter, the Daily Prophet gossip columnist that everyone loves to hate, we see Harry, Ron, and Hermione - families in tow- some 17 years later as the Quidditch World Cup final is in full swing. Our hero is sporting a fresh scar on his cheek, assumably attained from the “top secret” auror missions he has been on for the Ministry, and Ron looking a bit more thin-haired than normal. Per usual, Skeeter loudly displays her judgements on all of the topics she knows nothing of: Harry’s latest adventures in the dark arts, the state of the Potters’ quiet marriage, and Neville’s drinking habits.

The 1,500 word story reads like a “who’s who” page at large-scale celebrity events, grazing the surface of the lives of those celebrities in attendance. Though in the voice of my least-favorite fictional journalist, the short story by the best selling Rowling has left me with a feeling of disappointment, much like her announcement earlier this year stating that she wished she wrote Hermione as ending up with Harry, not Ron.

Allegiance aside, I give this a 3/5.
