Set to debut June 22nd, at 9pm ET/PT on TNT, the U.S.S Nathan James, a Naval Destroyer long out of port returns home to find the world thrown into chaos. Captained by Commander Tom Chandler, portrayed by Eric Dane (X-men 3, Grey’s Anatomy), with his second in command Slatterly, portrayed by Adam Baldwin (Chuck, FIREFLY), and almost to-pretty-for-science Rachel Scott, portrayed by Rhona Mitra (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, Boston Legal), a paleomicrobiologist (don’t feel bad, I had to look it up too) intent on finding a cure for the contagion threatening the world. They are the only ones left who can hope to put the world back on track.

Adapted from William Brinkley’s novel of the same name, “The Last Ship” is the newest brainchild of loved or hated director Michael Bay, in collaboration with the TNT network. Bay is no stranger to naval themes, with his Academy Award winning “Pearl Harbor”, as well as his recent “Black Sails” a prequel to the lit classic Treasure Island. Say what you will about the guy, his original works are pretty damn good. What has me intrigued is the casting of Ravil Isyanov as a Russian Admiral who seems to be the primary antagonist. This guy is AMAZING, hands down. The rest of the cast is pretty keen as well; Travis Van Winkle (Heart of Dixie), Charles Parnell (Pariah), Christina Elmore (Fruitvale Station),Sam Spruell (Snow White and The Huntsman), Marissa Neitling (Leverage), and last but not least, John Pyper-Ferguson (Burn Notice, Caprica).

Television USED to be where movie stars went to die, and programs were produced with cookie cutter like banality, but that’s definitely a thing of the past. Shows like “The Last Ship” have been popping up on HBO, Showtime, and similar networks like FX and TNT, and have been consistently impressive.
Naval warfare, suspense, post-apocalyptic setting, with some cheeky humor, and, I promise you, EXPLOSIONS. You kinda can’t go wrong. Check out the trailer below to see for yourself.
