Labyrinth of Ruin: A Descent Explansion
Fantasy Flight put plenty of time into making Descent: Journeys in the Dark a more simple, streamlined game back in July of last year. Descent is a dungeon delve board game where up to four players go against one person playing as the overlord. There are quests or a campaign that come with the base set, full of stories and planned reactions depending on if the players succeed or fail. The board is made up of modular pieces, making each time through the story slightly different than the time before. There are four archetypes to choose from in the base game, with multiple classes in each of those four choices. This along with all the items and bonuses you get through the game allow you to make brand new characters each time you play.
Coming in the second quarter of this year though, Fantasy Flight is coming out with an expansion to make the game even better. The Labyrinth of Ruin expansion is going to add many new things to their already exciting game.
One of the biggest additions is a new campaign to run through which will include nineteen new quests. These quests, like the ones in the base set, can be play by themselves but are meant for a bigger picture. In one of the unexplored regions of Terrinoth, the same location from before, there is a powerful sorceress trying to bring darkness to the rest of the world. Alongside the new quests and story, the expansion comes with a new overlord deck to break away from the first one, and many new monsters to help the sorceress achieve her goals.
No expansion would be complete though without also boosting the heroes cause. To help the hero players beat the evil sorceress, there have been four new characters added to choose from. There is a beastmaster and his pet wolf meant to hunt down their prey in the wild. There is a treasure hunter, who while good at finding his prized possessions, is also accomplished at keeping them safe. A hexer, or de-buffer, that uses dark curses, plagues and sickness to slow down the sorceress’s forces from snuffing out good. Then the apothecary, who has a potion, cure or even poison for any situation the party might get into.
There will also be new travel event cards, conditions, shop items and power dice to allow more customization during game play. The box will also include eighteen more map tiles to add to your collection. This expansion will be coming out in the next quarter, so keep an eye out for more previews as Fantasy Flight release more information in the next weeks and months leading up to its release.
