HarleyQuinn0-15Up until Tuesday there was still some question as to who won DC’s Harley Quinn #0 talent contest, which DC used to find a new artist to draw a single page for this week’s Harley Quinn #0. As many of you likely remember, the contest stirred up quite a controversy, but did get a large number of very decent (and often eerily similar) submissions. The winner ended up being a man by the name of Jeremy Roberts, which is a name some might have seen before in the comic book industry. It wasn’t until today however that we were able to confirm it was in fact comic colorist Jeremy P. Roberts, who has been working in the industry for over a decade on books like Noble Causes, GI Joe, and Marvel’s Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers. Roberts apparently won the contest and provided artwork for page 15 of Harley Quinn #0, albeit slightly altered from the original script used for the contest (undoubtedly at DC’s request, after the controversy exploded across the internet). You can see the virgin art, without any of the lettering, on the right. Oddly, this isn’t Roberts first time being published for work on a DC related character. Back in April of this year Roberts provided art for several Man of Steel related children’s books from Harper Festival (a children’s imprint of Harper Collins) that were written by John Sazaklis. Both Man of Steel: Superman Saves Smallville and Man of Steel: The Fate of Krypton feature Roberts stunning artwork.

It was an amazing opportunity. Being a comic book artist is something I’ve been dreamed about my entire life.
To be published in a comic book alongside legendary artists like Amanda Conner, Becky Cloonan, Tony S. Daniel, Stephane Roux, Dan Panosian, Walter Simonson, Jim Lee and Scott Williams, Bruce Timm, Charlie Adlard, Adam Hughes, Art Baltazar, Tradd Moore, Dave Johnson, Sam Kieth, Darwyn Cooke, and Chad Hardin. It’s INCREDIBLE, even better than I could have imagined.

I have to thank Jim Lee, Eddy Choi, Bob Harras, Brian Cunningham and everyone at DC who have made this such an amazing experience.
I also want to thank everybody who sent their congratulations! I really appreciate that.

Now it seems the contest has paid off for Roberts as he has recently been assigned to a new project at DC, drawing the final issue of Stormwatch. Set for release in April of next year, Stormwatch #30 is the final issue of a comic that has been running since the beginning of the New 52 and is the first DC incarnation of a long running Wildstorm title that almost dates back to the company’s creation under Image Comics. Drawing Jim Starlin’s script, Roberts will help send off the series before likely seeing even more work from DC on various other comic series.
