Vamp1sndprintDynamite’s new Vampirella series, written by acclaimed horror author Nancy Collins, is getting rave reviews and selling out at many stores. As you might expect, this has led to a second printing of Vampirella #1 with a black and white sketch version of Terry Dodson’s beautiful cover. Here’s the only odd part about this second printing…the first printing is still available at the distribution level, which is normally not the case when a second printing is announced. Sure, you’ll often find a few shops that still have first printings laying around for whatever reason (the shop over ordered, the book didn’t sell well in that area, or even the store owner hording a few for this possibility), but in this case Diamond Comic Distributor still has a number of first printing copies. So why the second printing? Well, the remaining first print copies are actually the blank sketch cover variant and the subscription variant by Stephanie Buscema (shown below). Buscema, who is also providing art for the #2 subscription variant which is out July 2nd, is making much more cartoon-y looking covers for Vampirella where as the other covers by Dodson, Frison, and the like provide a much sexier look for the vampire protagonist. It is likely the publisher realizes that this is a case where sex sells and the customers want a very specific cover for their book.

The Vampirella #1 second printing hits stores the same day as issue #2′s first printing, Wednesday July 2nd. But if you must have the first printing, now is the time to ask you local comic retailer to order one of the 2 remaining forms of Vampirella #1′s first printing (Diamond order codes: APR141070 & APR141070).
