Wolverines1cvrWhen Marvel announced a weekly Wolverine series at New York Comic Con today, the audience briefly had to presume, that in the middle of the Death of Wolverine, this was how James “Logan” Howlett was coming back from the afterlife. More amazing and unexpected was that this freshly announced series, entitled Wolverines, doesn’t actually feature the Wolverine we all know and love. In fact, the series will feature other characters related to and pick up the mantle of Wolverine. An odd approach to a comic fans will have to commit $4 a week to, but Marvel has a plan that just might get you in your local comic shop each week buying the newest issue of Wolverines.

Wolverines will be written by Death of Wolverine scribe, Charles Soule, and comic writer Ray Fawkes. Amazingly the weekly work load of art is all being handled by former Wolverine and the X-Men artist, Nick Bradshaw, who will have an impressive amount of work ahead of him. The comic will spin out of the upcoming Death of Wolverine: Logan’s Legacy mini-series and, while not featuring Logan himself, will star characters like Mystique, Daken, X-23, and Sabretooth. These are all characters who have been shaped and defined by Wolverine and will now be investigating the deceased character’s “murder” of sorts.

Based on the look of Sabertooth in the covers provided, we can assume this in some way also links up with Marvel’s big Avengers and X-Men crossover, AXIS. It’s a little early to fully speculate on this, as we’re still uncertain of how Wolverine will bite the dust next week, but New York Comic Con’s Death of Wolverine: Logan’s Legacy panels certainly has made it clear that Wolverines will follow up on issue #4 of the Death of Wolverine, while having 2 mini-series in Death of Wolverine: Logan’s Legacy and Death of Wolverine: Weapon X bridge the gap in stories. Both writers working on the series also promise surprises and new characters showing up, so this likely won’t be a “Wolverine, this was your life” look back on the Canadian character. Ray Fawkes already has experience writing a weekly comic, via Batman: Eternal over at DC, and will undoubtedly be working well with Soule to assure this book holds readers to return issue after issue, a task somewhat more daunting with a weekly release schedule. Wolverines #1 hits stores right at the start of 2015, with the weekly series beginning next January.
