Oni Press, the brilliant publishing company behind titles like Sixth Gun, White Out, and Scott Pilgrim, has just made a very ominous post on Twitter this week. The post claims Doom is coming, with a date marking this Friday, February 20th. Now normally such a post would be a simple hint at some upcoming comic announcement or release that we would wait to report on until more information was available. However, this story is building quick with a notable font and a more notable comic figure re-tweeting it. Creator Jhonen Vasquez, a writer and artist known popularly for his Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Squee series from Slave Labor Graphics, has re-tweeted Oni’s post. Vasquez has also worked in animation, recently writing an episode for Bravest Warriors, but is most legendary for his creation of the cult cartoon Invader Zim that ran on Nickelodeon from 2001-2003. Invader Zim still has a huge following over a decade later, with countless merchandise still being scooped off store shelves daily. Invader Zim also happens to share a font and title card design with Oni’s recent announcement of Doom. Just take a look:

Of course, the Invader Zim series was also in no way unfamiliar with the concept of doom, as you can see:

So could this be a sign that 12 years after the cartoon series ended, Invader Zim is finally coming back in comic form? It would certainly be a smart move guaranteed to take advantage of a large following that demands anything related to the small invading alien, Zim, and his brain dead android compatriot, Gir. But if this is the case, why now? Invader Zim has been off the air for over a decade and, while merchandise sales are still incredibly profitable, very little has been done with the property since. Furthermore, why Oni Press? Buying up licensed series for comic form has always been more of a Boom Studios, Dynamite Entertainment, and IDW game. Especially with Boom currently producing a Bravest Warriors comic, another series affiliated with Vasquez, wouldn’t that be the logical publisher to dive on this sort of comic? Or perhaps Slave Labor Graphics, the publisher that put Vasquez on the map 20 years ago through JtHM. It certainly all raises a lot of questions if Oni is hinting at Invader Zim. However, in the end, most of the questions will be thrown out the window in favor of celebration if it is true that we’ll be seeing a return of Invader Zim. At that point the only real questions will be in what way is Vasquez involved with the series and who will be the creative team.

Oni will be attending the 2015 Annual Comics Pro meeting this weekend in Portland, Oregon. They’re set to have a 20 minute presentation at 12:50PM PST. More than likely we’ll get our answers there. So check back on Friday for more news as this story develops!
