HUGE Disneyland Star Wars News Out Of D-23 Expo
Before this years D-23 Expo began the biggest rumor going in was that we were going to find out details about any new Star wars presence in the theme parks, especially the possibility of a new land dedicated to Star Wars. Today, that was exactly what we got. Bob Iger announced a very ambitious project. Star Wars Land would be coming to both Disney World in Florida, and Disneyland in Anaheim!!
Both lands will be about 14 acres, the largest single themed land expansions for Disney, and we are being told the land will fully submerse you into the Star Wars Universe. The land will be set in a brand new world of the universe and its shops and restaurants will all be staffed by “local inhabitants” meaning Disney cast members will be dressed up in special costumes/uniforms/make-up, to make guests really feel like they have left the galaxy.
“I am thrilled to announce the next chapter in the long and exciting history between Disney Parks and Star Wars,” said Iger. “Through each new attraction and new land we create, we push the boundaries of what is possible. And as you can imagine, with Star Wars, we are taking that to a whole new level, with a whole galaxy to explore.”
Along with the assorted eateries, shops and smaller scale attractions the lands at both parks will have 2 signature attractions (commonly known as “E-ticket” rides), one of which will allow you to control the famed Millennium Falcon on a customized secret mission, while the other will thrust you into the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance. Not much is known about the concept of these rides, but there are some rumors floating around that the latter might deal with some VR, we can only hope.
The announcement set the internet ablaze. Most of the responses are filled with excitement, there are a few that worry about how this will dramatically change the park. What remains to be known is where this new land will be located? (**update** It has since been announced that the Big Thunder Ranch area on the edge of Frontier Land will be the home of Star Wars Land)
So what else do the parks have planned for guests and passholders? I will tell you dear readers:
Early 2016 will bring us the Season of the Force. “This new seasonal event, beginning early 2016, brings new experiences to both coasts. In Tomorrowland at Disneyland park, guests will explore the Star Wars galaxy with special entertainment, themed food locations and Hyperspace Mountain – a reimagining of the classic Space Mountain attraction in which guests will join an X-wing starfighter battle. Disney’s Hollywood Studios will feature a new fireworks spectacular set to the iconic score of the Star Wars movies on weekend nights.”
We wont have to wait until next year for new Star Wars themed fun to start popping up, later this year Innovations will be host to Star Wars Launch Bay, an interactive experience much like Marvel’s Hero HQ, also located in Innovations, where fans can meet heroes and villains from the entire Star Wars Saga. Also later this year some new locations are being added to the current Star Tours line-up making the adventure even broader.
It has never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan…especially if you are also a Disneyland fanatic, so I am beyond excited.

Darren Schram is the manager extraordinaire of Sky High Comics in San Marcos, Ca. He started out reading GI Joe comics when he was a kid, moving on to collecting Star Wars comics exclusively, while reading the occasional title off the rack in a local drug store...just to "check in" with the comic world. Darren did a graceful high dive into the comic book pools deep end just over a decade ago. Now it isn't a question of what is he reading, but more..what isn't he reading? He is what he calls a "multi-denominational geek", with exceptional geek cred in Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, that award him his self appointed elite status. He also once "scissor kicked Angela Lansbury."
