Some of you fans, customers, and retailers may have noticed something a little off from one of Diamond’s top tier comic publishers yesterday. IDW released zero comics on January 14th, the second comic book release day of 2015. If you didn’t notice it we consider that very understandable considering all the focus on Marvel’s Star Wars #1 release. Those who did catch the lack of comics from San Diego’s popular comic publisher might have simply presumed it was to avoid releases being buried under the flood of Star Wars variants and sheer quantity of Marvel’s major 2015 release. But this was not the case as Vice President of Marketing for IDW, Dirk Wood, shared with retailers today:

Dear Retailers,

You might have noticed a lack of IDW product coming out 1/14, and a mountain of great product hitting the shelves from IDW on 1/21. This wasn’t by design; there was a 48-hour winter weather highway closure that kept our books from getting to Diamond on time, pushing back the majority of our 1/14 books.

We understand this is not an ideal situation, and do apologize. We always try to spread our product out in a way that makes sense for your budgets, shelves, and customers, but this was a situation beyond our control. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, and look forward to things getting back to normal in ensuing weeks.

Once again winter weather has disrupted the flow of comics like a civil war on Arrakis might disrupt the flow of Spice. To many comic readers this might be unnoticeable, while a few are undoubtedly rankled they have to wait an extra week for their copies of TMNT and Baldurs Gate. The bigger problem comes to the retailers that IDW addressed, as many have limited display space and must pay for their books on a weekly basis. Because of this, having a large number of comics release on a single week can put a strain on space and finances. Similar effects strain the wallets of comic customers on a budget. Yet it is rare to see such an apology from the publisher, especially when weather is the true culprit. But for a fair number of comic fans they’ll just see January 21st as an extra christmas in the way of IDW books with a flood of great new #1 comic releases and follow ups to favorite series. Below is a list of all the incredible books you can expect to find at you local comic shop from IDW next week. We highly recommend the Kickstarted OGN anthology, Imaginary Drugs. So swing by your local shop and help relieve their bills and shelves while filling your collection with some great IDW books this Wednesday!
