Last Friday, shortly after the closure of Image Expo 2015 and its related retailer summit, comic creator Chip Zdarsky sat down for a signing at a San Francisco sex shop, Good Vibrations. For most comic creators this might be an odd place for a signing, but for the artist behind Sex Criminals and so many other hilarious writings, drawings, and antics this was the perfect stage for Mr. Zdarsky. Recently Chip and Sex Criminals co-creator, Matt Fraction, published an adult book based on the letters column for their comic series, entitled Just The Tips. Just The Tips, which was released in hardcover last December, includes hilarious sex tips, positions, and erotica written and illustrated by Zdarsky and Fraction while being published by Image Comics. It is likely the first production by Image Comics to find itself on sale in an adult book store. But because of this, Chip found his way to Valencia and 17th Street for a signing and surprise reading of Just The Tips.

The adult book store, that catered mainly in marital aids, had a mixed audience of comic fans and those ignorantly hoping Zdarsky might be the next E. L. James (author of 50 Shades of Gray). Zdarsky was setup at a table wonderfully placed right next to a collection of comic themed dildos, including one in the shape of Thor’s Hammer. After his arrival, one of the staff of Good Vibes had the shops customers gather around Zdarsky so he could entertain before signing. Zdarsky seemed somewhat surprised by this, seeming to only expect a signing, but gladly took the opportunity to read some of the short erotica from Just The Tips.

 

 

Reading several excerpts from Just The Tips, that includes pieces written by both himself and Fraction, Zdarsky then continued with a tale and reading of his false excerpt from the fake novel, The Petals Fall Twice.

Zdarsky signed at the adult shop for 2 hours, while taking countless hilarious pictures and providing many memorable personalizations for fans in their books. The signing even had surprise drop ins like Jamie McKelvie and Kieron Gillen. You can purchase Just The Tips as well as Sex Criminals volume 1 at your local comic shop currently. Issue #10 of Sex Criminals will be in stores January 28th, and Chip’s newest comics, Howard The Duck and Kaptara, will release in March and April respectively.
