Batman And The Walking Dead Crossover

Right on the heels of this weekend’s spectacular Walking Dead Season Finale, Image Comics and DC Comics announced a major company crossover, Batman and The Walking Dead! In the vein of Marvel’s Invincible/Spider-man crossover in Marvel Team-Up #14, Robert Kirkman will be writing a major crossover mini-series wherein Batman must go up against zombies in Gotham City. We first saw a hint of this with the above teaser at this weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con, but editors and creators on panel kept their lips tight (albeit smiling) about what it meant. Now we know and I don’t think fans could get much more excited.

Long time comic art veteran, Mike McKone (Teen Titans, Avengers Academy), who has recently returned to DC Comics, will be handling art duties while Zombie master Arthur Suydam (Marvel Zombies) provides covers for the 4-issue mini-series set to release this October. Kirkman has announced the plot will not, of course, be truly Walking Dead canon as Rick Grimes and his team wander their way into a post-zombie apocalypse Gotham City, where a tired and worn out Batman continues to try and save the citizens of his city from a deadly zombie plague. How will Rick, Carl, Andrea, and the rest take to a Kevlar clad super hero swinging around fighting zombies? Well that certainly is the question fans didn’t even know they were dying to find out, but it will likely cause the comics to hit high sales numbers. Kirkman had this to say about the series “We’ve actually been in talks about this comic for some time now. Originally Geoff [Johns] was working on the script, but his schedule prevented him from moving forward on the story and it fell back in my lap. I must say, though, I am really excited to be writing Batman alongside my own characters.”

DC Comics Co-Publisher, Dan Didio, added “We are very honored to be working alongside Robert Kirkman, who has done many astounding things for comics over at Image, with the incredibly high sales of The Walking Dead. Hopefully this is just the start of DC’s work with Robert, and we’ll have more exciting news later this year.” Exciting indeed. Whether this could mean that Kirkman is also potentially writing something for DC or there is just a possibility of more Image/DC crossover books on the way, I’m not certain.
